Spur Steak Ranches – Why I need to share it with you…..
Always a good experience..had some bad too ànd,if ònly I can get rèàl onion rings!!We’ve been,to a lot of different SPUR steak ranches and they’ve really stepped up their game, these last few years. We’ve had some problems, with the SPUR in ALIWAL NORTH(franchise closed down)a few years ago.We tend,to order the same food from the menu, when dining out.I mean, that was the main reason for us having a meal out,at SPUR.This particular SPUR shuffled their management and unfortunately got rid of,some of the managers and waiters, that really were an asset to the business. We experienced them,as real “people” people. They took good care of us and we returned quite often. The new management included a new, young manager and her girlfriend was one of the waitresses.RARE,VÈRY RARE
My husband likes his meat RARE,like in “give the steer it’s tail and off it goes” rare. Now look, rare doesn’t mean, raw(according to hubby, eating away on the “bloody”) “juicy”steak and “bloody”) “sauce”and accented that it should definitely not be tough, but that’s exactly what happened. The T-bone was rare(BLUE-RARE!!) alright, but tough,on the thickest parts. He couldn’t cut through the meat, with the “steak knive&fork set”We called the waitress and told her about it.She took the plate back,to the cook. All the while,I’ve been waiting for my food.Ladies Rump, with onion on rings and chips(fries)The supposedly onion rings were a oily, mushy mess and to tell you the honest truth, disgusting. The Chips weren’t fried properly and I only received mý food, when they brought my husband’s,back from the kitchen. When my chips arrived,I could smell ànd taste the old oil, used for frying.
My husband received his food, again and thìs time, the waitress brought my husband,a sharper knife and fork set.According to the manager, the cook suggested it,as hè can’t do any more with the meat, without ruining and overcook the “rare”steak.ÀLWAYS LEAVE A TIP
I called the manager again, as the waitress wasn’t in the mood, for” grumpy” diners.Well,we paid and left…Yes we àlways pay, because somebody down this food chain, needs that job, that extra income, that commission, that generous tip.Usually, the waiters are the ones, stuck in the middle, between the diners and the cook/kitchen staff.
I called SPUR‘s customer care and in turn, the owner of the franchise, called me.He wasn’t very friendly, because I didn’t contact him personally.I calmly told him everything and then added, that there wasn’t even a hint,of who the “Franchise owner” was,so how was I supposed to know. Then I said, that it wasn’t my job,to see to it,that his staff did their work. Also that I could call whom I want,as I did it from mý phone, with mý airtime.
FREE MEAL… AGAIN
He offered us a free meal, which I declined,as I didn’t want to get stuck,in the same situation.
We didn’t have the honor,to visit a few weeks later,as thìs SPUR was closed down.We weren’t the ònly ones, who complained about thìs outlet….
2018:One of our many, wonderful family visits,to remember at our favorite:Buffalo Springs Spur,in Queenstown South Africa.
A few months later,we stopped over at Queenstown,on our way to East London. We decided,to have a bite,at thàt SPUR.
It was during the time, smoking wasn’t allowed,in the main dining room, anymore. The smokers were given an adjacent area, devided by glass panels.
The place was packed and the smoker’s area was cloudy, from all the smoke in the air.At some stage, during the meal,I asked the waitress,to please tell the manager, that the smoke was filtering through,to our side somehow.Nobody attended to it and after the 2nd time,I decided to sort it out with Customer Care again.Big was my surprise, when I got a call from the owner himself…none other, than the owner of the Aliwal North franchise.
He was very apologetic, this time around.Again he offered us a free meal, should we pass through, again.
We never took him on,on the offer.I felt, that a meal can’t fix the unpleasantness we had, because of the bad taste, the improper managing,of the smokers area, left on our mouths… That did not discourage us, to keep visiting the SPUR outlets, whenever we hit a city or town, with a SPUR STEAK RANCH.We love their food and it totally depends,on the franchise owner, whether his business turns out to be a failure,or success. We only had òne other insident again. It was when we flew back home, from Pretoria, after my eldest brother’s 60th birthday,in October 2018It was the SPUR at O.R.TAMBO international Airport. My order was totally wrong and when it eventually arrived,it wasn’t as I ordered it.I hot rare meat, which I nèver eat, with rice, instead of chips and no salad. My husband got the wrong size meat ànd not the sides he ordered!!When the waitress eventually attend to us, she took the food back and came back to apologize..said she wrote the order wrong… The “chef” will fix our orders. She totally forgot, that she repeated our order back at us!!!We didn’t have enough time,to go into it and had to decline, the corrected food, as we had to board our plane…. That’s surely not a SPUR I’ll easily visit and waste my time on,when flying again.
I didn’t bother with too much information,as I was so angry, that I could’ve said and done something,I could regret for years to come…this photo was taken,on our way out.The restaurant is vèry cramped and small.Couldn’t take pictures inside…
That aside….we don’t go out, that much anymore, but if we decide to eat out,we’ll drive that extra mile,to find a SPUR STEAK RANCH Since my youngest daughter(and until last month my eldest son)lives in the city,my husband and I love sò much:EAST LONDON SOUTH AFRICA….
We never pass the BUFFALO SPRINGS SPUR in Queenstown,South Africa…
